Ukrainian Refugees attend church in Czech Republic

March 16, 2022 Brooke Reynolds

Don Sedgwick (bishop of our Laguna Hills congregation) shares this story about his son Mark, currently serving a mission in the Czech/Slovak Republic, bordering Ukraine:

"Many Ukrainian refugees are members of the church, and several have crossed over into our son’s mission. Some were invited to stay in the homes of Czech members of the church. These Ukrainian refugees have been so touched to be part of our church family, where they felt an instant connection to the saints in a neighboring country. They felt love for one another through their shared faith and membership. After leaving everything behind, except what they could fit in a backpack, and not knowing if they would ever return home, they were lovingly accepted by strangers.

They attended fast and testimony meeting last Sunday in our son’s branch. Normally, about 6 people attend on Sundays, but last Sunday it was closer to 30, including several members who had been less active, and several Ukrainians. Testimonies were shared in the Ukraine language, then translated into Czech.

The most powerful moment of the meeting was at the end when they all stood up and sang, “Count Your Blessings”. Looking at each other while they sang, they all began to weep. They were so moved by the love that they felt for one another, and for the Savior; and were able, despite the tragedy, to recognize how blessed they were. It became so emotional that they were unable to finish the hymn. They just stopped, and looked at one other, hugged each other, and then closed the meeting with prayer.

Unity. Love. The Spirit of God. That is what the gospel brings. And it was evident in the warmth of that little meetinghouse on that unforgettable snowy, cold day in the Czech Republic."
